About SACU

The Chairperson of the SACU Council of Ministers

The current Chairman of the SACU Council of Ministers is the Honourable Minister of Finance For the Kingdom of Swaziland Senator Majozi Sithole.

The 2002 SACU Agreement makes provisions for the Chairmanship of Council to be held in turn by each Member State (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland) for a period of one year, beginning 14th July of a given year.

14 July is the day in which the current SACU Agreement was signed in 2002.

The chairmanship is rotated among the Member States on an annual basis in an alphabetical order.

The Chairmanship of SACU since the signing of the 2002 SACU Agreement which came into force in July 2004 is as outlined below:

  • July 2004 - Namibia, through the Honourable Minister of Finance Ms. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila
  • July 2005 - South Africa, though the Honourable Minister of Finance Mr. Trevor Manuel
  • July 2006 - Swaziland, through the Honourable Minister of Finance Mr. Majozi Sithole
  • July 2007 - Botswana, through the Honourable Minister of Finance Mr. Baledzi Gaolathe
  • July 2008 - Lesotho, through the Honourable Minister of Finance Dr. Timothy Thahane
  • July 2009 - Namibia through the Honourable Minister of Finance Ms. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila
  • July 2010 - South Africa through the Honourable Minister of Finance Mr. Pravin Gordhan
  • July 2011 - Swaziland through the Honourable Minister of Finance Mr. Majozi Sithole
  • July 2012 - Botswana through the Honourable Minister of Finance Mr. Ontefetse K. Matambo
